Agari Poems
Chandrakant Kaluram Mhatre
These poems are written in Agari, an Indo-Aryan dialect spoken primarily by the Agari-Koli community of the North Konkan region of Maharashtra. Rather than standardizing the language, the original Agari texts are presented alongside English versions to preserve their linguistic texture, cultural memory, and poetic world.

English Version
The cup is full, yet hands are empty.
How did all of it turn out like this?
Old mountains, our elders, stood by us.
Their chests torn apart for gravel and dust.
Green paddy and orchards buried deep.
Sowing money, graves sprang up atop.
Wherever eyes reach, only vultures roam.
Forget peacocks, feathers too are gone.
As homes changed, relationships changed.
The heart is left behind, the pocket leads.

Agari Text
