Target Text
Artifice of some kind
I know not to charm people
I perform Your keertan*
Singing sublime Your praise
I know not medicinal plants
Miracles every now and then
Nor I have flocks of followers
To spread my holiness among people
Nor I'm the head of some monastery
Nor do I wish any land donations
Nor conduct elaborate idolatry
Having set up such shop
Nor have any spirits blessed me
With the ability to divine signs
Nor I'm a reciter of scriptures
Acting, preaching otherwise
Nor a debater of arcane theology
Like the pundits deplorable
Nor do I burn frankincense
Praising goddesses euphorically
Nor do I clatter a rosary
Gathering yokels around
Nor proficient in black arts
Evil doings of witchcraft
Tuka is not like those
Condemned to the purgatory

* All Varkari Saints performed keertans as an effective means of social awakening. A typical Varkari keertan comprises of singing abhang to the accompaniment of such musical instruments as veena, pakhavaj and taal. What sets a Varkari keertan apart from such other performance is the performer’s commentary on the abhang being sung.
